Remembering Our
Cars
We drove classic cars and did not
even know it. This page will honor
those precious machines that we all
wish we still had. Send a picture or
description of your own set of
wheels. |
Our
Cars, Really A Synonym For Freedom.
We could go where we wanted and do
what we wanted without anyone
telling us no. Well, we were
told NO! a lot, but once we were in
our cars, safe from the view of our
parents, LOOK OUT! Up and down Main
Street a dozen times, past your
current "Crush's" house a couple of
times, watch out for Benny Butler,
a ticket was too hard to explain.
Stop at the gas station, maybe
Standard or Phillip's 66 for a can
of pop, maybe Mobil to see Shine, or
Conoco if there was a gas war going
on and the price was right.
Hmmm--maybe the girls were at the
Busy Bee Cafe, better stop by and
check, maybe get a hamburger and
fries, or The Dairy Mart for a
chocolate malt or maybe they had
Lemon Ice Cream that day. Oh yeah,
stop at McNaught's store or Platt's
Corner to pick up what ever it was
you told your Mom you were going to
town for, you had to have a reason
after all. What we really wanted was
to see and be seen, whatever was
happening was certainly going to be
happening in Glidden or, if not, hey
let's go to Carroll. Way more
trouble to be had there, more cars
to race, exotic women, (Carroll
Kuemper girls), Two Carroll Cop
Cars, Highway Patrol, Sheriff
Office, oh man one wrong move
and------! We loved it, the most
exciting time of our lives, an
adventure around every corner.
Where did we get the energy?!!!
So I started
thinking about what cars we were
driving in those days and I decided
to make a list, I know I'm missing
some peoples rides and I may not be

A lot of us drove
the family car when we could get the
keys or the farm truck or whatever
we could get our hands on, the
important thing was the chance to
spread our wings and see how high we
could fly before we were grounded.
If I missed your car or paired you
with the wrong one (oh the shame)
send a photo in to Dick and have him
post it. P.Stougard
COMMENT:
Geeze, and I thought I had a great
memory. I guess I was lost in my own
selfish world. What classic pictures
of a classic car. Paul is now
designated our Official Old Car
Expert. d.tryon

Hey Stu, my 53' Belair was skyblue
with a white hardtop; it wasn't
green. Love, Jimmie.. |
My
Classic....1958 Chevy
Wow,
tears in MY eyes. Two door, stick
shift (on column) and it only cost
$200. Eh, unfortunately, this was
NOT 1958, but about nine years later
and...........it was PINK......Geeze,....PINK,
but I still want it
back.......Actually, it was pink and
white and they called the color
"coral", but it was pink. It had a
radio that every time I hit a bump,
it would change channels. It was
very hard to find the channel that I
wanted. (KIOA in Des Moines) or KOMA
(Oklahoma City) WLS (Chicago) at
night. I bought an 8 track player
because the radio never seemed to
work. It ate tapes, occasionally. I
had a nifty gear shift knob, those
chrome feet pedal for the
accelerator and little balls hanging
in the back window. Pure
COOL.....Gosh, I hope they were not
pink. It did not have a very large
engine, nor the fancy chrome, but it
was mine. We lived less than a block
from the school and I drove to
school every day and parked with
pride in front of the gym. When we
moved to the Dairy Mart rode, I
never drove to school, just walked
and it was farther than before. I
guess the thrill of driving to
school was fading away. My Dad had a
farm a few miles out of town, so I
filled my tank out there. All the
gas I wanted, I know, pretty
spoiled. Before we had the farm, I
got gas at Lloyd's Conoco, formerly
Shaner's. Many a time ,I would put
in a whopping 50 cents. A guy
could scoop the loop all night on 50
cents.......d.tryon (cars pictured
are similar) COOL BABY COOL
In the movie, American Grafitti,
Toad is driving Ron Howard's car, a
1958 Chevy, all sooped up. At the
traffic light, Harrison Ford looks
over and says, "What a waste of
machine...." When he see who is
driving it. I can relate.......Photos
are not my original car, but a
facsimile. |
