Fourth Grade In
Ralston.......
Fourth grade was such a fun year
since we got to ride the bus all the
way to Ralston. That was a real
treat for us city kids! I remember
eating lunch in the basement where
we were served by Melinda Douglas
and the plays we would put on there
as well. I remember Paul Stougard
doing cartwheels down the aisle when
Miss Pagles would leave the room.

On The Ralston Celebration.....
The Ralston celebration was put on
by the Ralston Coop for customers
and neighbors each summer. The food
was prepared by all the employees
and people who lived in Ralston.
The Coop meeting room on Main Street
next to Dickinson Grocery and the
community room across the street
was used for preparing the food.
Baked beans were made in huge pots
and delivered in the back of pickups
to every oven in town to bake.
Sandwiches were buttered and ham
sliced at the community room, all
served on the school grounds now
known as the Karl Nolin Park.
Everything was free and all the
pop you could drink. Crowds of over
a thousand were not unusual. All
was done by the employees and
community of Ralston, no catering in
those days. Lots of fun and great
memories. The Ralston school meals
for the 4th graders were
prepared in Glidden and brought over
for serving by Malinda
Douglas……(Mike Johnson’s future
Mother In Law.) Mike and Sheila

Remembering
Ralston.....
In our day, all fourth graders had to
get bussed to school in Ralston for
a year. It was the first time us
town people ever rode a bus. It was
quite a thrill. I remember the best
part was the school day was shorter
because we had to get back to
Glidden before the country busses
left. One day, when we got on the
bus to go back, there was a dead
hawk next to the driver. It had hit
the windshield of the bus as he
drove to pick us up. The windshield
was smashed, and the hawk might have
gone through it.. Poor thing was
just looking up and staring at us
all the way home. I could see him
waking up and flying around the bus.
Now that would have been exciting.
I also remember going to the big
Ralston celebration in the summer.
What they were celebrating, I have
no idea. There was usually a ride or
two and free pop. The pop was in big
tanks filled with water and ice. The
pop in those days was in bottles and
cost a nickel, but were free at this
event. I would drink orange or grape
pop and eat lots of ice cream, then
jump on that ride that twirls around
as you sit and spin. A Whirly Bird?
Anyway, I would get so sick. It was
automatic. We all would have to go
somewhere and throw up. Gosh, I
thought that was part of the
celebration. It always seemed so hot
on those days. I am not sure what
the adults would do, except visit.
There might have been music playing.
I know that us kids would just run
and run and run.......d.tryon
